Harry Potter film saga -

These films have given me a lot of inspiration over my life as i have always liked the films. The VFX within the film is very good and something i would like to emulate, however they had a large budget, large team and many experts. Keeping this in mind i will be keeping my expectations low however i still want to create a high quality and well shot piece. Watching the films there are many shots that i would like to emulate.

In this video it goes over some of the wizard battles within the films saga. Most using their wands which is something i would like to do as well and make it look like it is real. To do this i will need to watch and see how things like light works as in how bright, how far it reaches etc. I will also want props to help with tracking and adding to the realism, along with this i will continue to research into how the professionals did it and see what i can pick up from them to help myself.

This short film is made by two brothers and uses a lot of VFX. This is one of my main inspirations as it is very funny and well made, it won a few awards and was a major success at the time of release. Some things i want to emulate is mostly the shot choice as it is very well done as well as having a wide variety. Along with this there is high quality VFX used. Most or all of the shots are hand-held as well as moving, this creates the effect of fast paced action. They also used practical effects as it makes the effect more realistic as it is actually real.

They also made a part 2 to the short film with more of the same techniques put on a larger scale however i prefer the idea of a duel rather than a large amount of characters. This is also useful as its more inspiration in terms of shot choices and gives a idea of the quality needed.

This blog goes over the full jobs and pipeline used within the world of the VFX industry. This also has examples of big blockbuster movies that use VFX and 3d modelled elements. This is a great insight into the VFX industry and what i can expect in the future and it has some tips and ideas to keep in mind when planning my career and future steps. The blog goes over some of the best industry standard software, some of which I have begun learning.

This is a video that i found that helped me learn tracking as well as other effects and techniques. This is also a good video to turn to as it covers some of the basics while setting up the tracking and puppet tool, so i can refer to this in between editing to refresh myself on what i need to do each time to be consistent.

This site goes over some key ideas when filming, especially when going for a fast paced look. The first is keeping eye line, this mean to keep the audiences eye in the same place to make quick cuts without the audience moving their eyes too much. This means the flow can stay quick without the need for long shots so the audience can keep taking in the information. Their example was Mad Max which keep the action in the centre on the frame allowing for quicker cuts as the audience hasn't got to look around for whats happening.

The next is colouring of the shot. This is important as you don't want to cut from extreme light to dark and visa versa. This is so the audience's eyes don't have to adjust or be confused and miss information

The third tip is to cut to the beat of a song. This is a great idea as it helps keep pace and if its a fast and hyper song then the video and cuts should be able to replicate that idea and i do plan on using this in some way.

The last two tips go over the idea of matching shot and camera movement, once again I feel that this is mostly about keeping the video moving and can keep the pace fast.

This Blog has a few tips about some of the basics of After Effects. As i am new to the world of After Effects this short blog has taught me some of the simpler tools within the software, although i may not need these now, in the future they may. I also plan on referring to this later on if i am struggling or even following some of the links on the page to go to more in depth ideas and tutorials

I found this video is very useful to me as it is a mix between a short film as well as going over how they made it. They go over the practical effects like lighting and some of the camera work but then also go into the effects in detail, going over where they got them from as well as what they did to the effect to make it look realistic and clean. Thehy also had some shot choices that i would like to copy like the close up, this would be a great shot to do as i would only need practical effects to make it and this reduces editing time.
